Tour de Gruene – This Weekend – Hams Needed

Just got off the phone earlier today with Mike WQ5C with GVARC.   Lance Armstrong has registered to compete in Sunday’s Team Trial Rides, and registration has been capped at 240 teams.  This means it will take 2 hours from starting the first pair of riders and then sending another pair of riders out every 30 seconds from the starting gate.

Mike told me that they will be using the 147.000 repeater (negative offset, 103.5 tone).  Some positions may need push-up pole and external antennas down in the river road area, but most will let you get by with a mobile radio and antenna, and a few might let you use your HT.  Come loaded for bear and you won’t be down in the mush when net control calls you.   Bring a folding chair to sit in, Bring a cooler, sunscreen & a hat as you will be there for 2-3 hours or longer, depending on assignment.

Hi all,

The 25th annual Tour de Gruene is coming up on November 1 & 2. Complete info & maps can be found here: www.tourdegruene.com

This year, they’re actually adding a couple of new events. Unfortunately, that also means that they will be looking for additional support from the amateur radio community. I’m looking for 2m mobile stations that can help with the event. The more, the merrier!

SATURDAY – NEED MORE HAM HELP ESPECIALLY FOR THIS SEGMENT

Saturday morning will see a 15, 30, and 40 mile recreational rides. The route is new this year. They will ride from Gruene into Landa Park before heading up River Road. The 15 mile route turns around at the 2nd crossing. The 30 mile route turns around in Sattler and rides back down River Road. The long route takes a loop around Sattler before returning down River Road. The event starts at 8am, and is usually over around noon. I need about 8 stations to cover the entire route fully.

Saturday afternoon will see a 16 mile race, starting at 3pm. Riders start at Camp Huaco Springs, and ride 8 miles up River Road before turning around for their starting point. I need 3 stations to cover this event. I do not know how long this event will last.

SUNDAY – NEED A FEW MORE HAMS FOR THIS SEGMENT

The race on Sunday is unchanged from prior years. Riders start in Gruene, ride up River Road to Sattler, and return via FM 306 to Gruene. Riders start between 8am & 10am. We are usually done by about noon. I need about 6 stations to cover the entire route fully.

Please let me know if you can help with the event, or if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Mike WQ5C

PS: Several of us will probably be getting together both mornings for breakfast at “Los Gallos” ( 337 near Common St. ) at about 7am.  Come join us if you can.
