100_1502As we reported earlier, the organizing committee for the BPMS150, Houston – Austin bike tour wisely made the decision to “cancel” day 1 of the 2 day event, due to excessive rain, flooding, and generally nasty weather.

More than 10 inches of rain fell on Friday, accompanied by winds gusting in excess of 60 mph.  On Saturday, more of the same hit the area.  6-8 inches of rain hit much of Day 1’s route, flooding the minor side streets like the state highways or Farm Market roads normally ridden by the bike riders.   Many of the rest areas were under water or were too muddy to be used.

bp-ms-150-logo-color_smallDue to severe t-storms which dropped as much as 10 inches of rain or more across the route being used for the 2009 BPMS150 event, and the prediction of 60% chance of more severe t-storms dropping another 6-10 inches of rain on Saturday, the executive committee met on Friday night and pulled the plug on the first day of the 2 day event.  Riders will be transported Saturday afternoon to La Grange, TX (or will find their own way there in private vehicles) where they will spend the night, and take off as normal Sunday morning for the ride to Austin, TX where the finish line awaits.

Here is a YouTube video showing the La Grange Fairgrounds area on Friday, the day before the BPMS150 (video only, no audio) …

National MS - Texas Lonestar Chapter LogoOur MS staff is supporting us (the hams)  favorably, they promised that van rental is available local in San Antonio, Austin, or Dallas box truck or SAG van. Hams picking up their SAG or Box truck would return it back to original pickup location where they got it, not drive back to Houston to return it.

BP150 Day 2 Start in LaGrangeAlso MS will provide paid for hotel rooms (Crowne Plaza) on Friday night, plus the usual free bunks at the church camp on Saturday night.  We’re still working to arrange designated refueling gas stations around like last yr.

It’s our 25th yr & with registration already closed at 13,000 riders,  I don’t anticipate problems with the event, other than normal.   Some break points have been moved to new locations on the route due to size problems.

April 12-13, 2008 – BP150 Bicycle Tour (13, 000 riders from Houston to Austin)

About a 150+ hams helped support the annual BP150 Bicycle Tour, from Houston to La Grange on Day 1, La Grange to Austin on Day 2. 3 calls for life flight to pick up riders with serious problems, plus a few transported by ambulance on Day 1. No major medical calls on day 2. We’re working onan article about this event, but in the meantime, here are some photos taken by the webmaster. Click on photo for a larger view. We’ll put to gether a photo montage set of pages, separate from this page to keep from causing the load time to deteriouate for all viewers.

Lee, N5NTG, and his son David, KD5MTJ, were driving SAG 10, Alternate Turtle on Day 1, Express Route Turtle on Day 2. This was a tremendous effort with hams from Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and points between, setting up temp repeaters in areas that had little or no coverage normally, including digipeaters for APRS. Echolink and IRLP were used to tie in all repeaters each day, so that Houston Net Control was able to run the route up until the last segment of Day 2 when it closed with Austin. (And I’m not sure they weren’t still listening in, but they needed some sleep also.)
