Lee Cooper W5LHCRay Taylor (N5GAR), STX’s long-serving and dedicated SM, retired this year, resulting in a 3-way race for Section Manager of one of the ARRL’s largest Sections.

STX was lucky to have three fine hams, Lee Cooper (W5LHC) from Austin, Lou Everett (WA5LOU) from Kennard and Gary Tangrady (K5GST) from San Antonio vie to replace Ray Taylor.

The ARRL just announced the election results:

A close race between good men.

Congratulations to Lee who will officially take office on October 1, 2009.

Ray Taylor N5NAVThe San Antonio Radio Club has invited the 3 hams running for the vacancy caused by Ray Taylor N5NAV retiring as South Texas Section Manager for the ARRL this year, to speak at their July membership meeting.
 
This meeting wil be held on Thursday, July 9, 2009 @ 7 pm at the K-Comm Ham Store located at 10815 Gulfdale, San Antonio, Texas 78216 (Near Isom Rd & Hwy 281, just west of the SA International Airport).

Meet the 3 candidates who are running for ARRL South Texas Section Manager. One of these three hams will be the successor to Ray Taylor N5NAV:

  • Gary S. Tangrady, K5GST
  • Lee Cooper, W5LHC
  • Lou Everett, Sr., WA5LOU

Candidates will be asked / allowed to make a short presentation of their plans and visions for our section.  The club meeting is open to the any ham radio operator interested in hearing what these three have to say, or in finding out more about the San Antonio Radio Club.  Visitors are always welcomed.

The original article was emailed to me from WServerNews, dealt with “cloud computing” and the danger of relying soley upon having your data “out there” in the Internet, vulnerable to such disruptions…   Something my company, Digital Fortress, also deals with on a daily basis, called “business continuity planning” or “building a Plan B”.  

But the article goes on to talk about how some hospitals dealt with their crisis, by calling out the ham radio operators….. ta da!  (The link in the quoted extract below, links to an ARRL article that goes into more details about ham radio involvement – Lee)

Realizing that they’d need more two-way radio, authorities dispatched police to wake up the emergency coordinator of the regional ham radio club, and escort him to the community hospital with his equipment. Area hams dispatched ambulances and doctors, arranged for essential supplies, and relayed emergency communications out of the area to those with working telephones.
