Area Spring Games Canceled

specialolympics_2008All Special Olympics Texas Spring Games scheduled for this weekend, May 1-2, have been canceled because of concerns over the spread of swine flu.  This decision was made based on public health recommendations, the cancellation of some host venues and the withdrawal of many participating delegations. Also, it is consistent with the action taken by the University Interscholastic League (UIL).

“Keeping the best interests of our athletes, volunteers and families in mind, we know this is a disappointing but necessary step given the circumstances,” said Margaret Larsen, President and CEO of Special Olympics Texas.  “The health and safety of our Special Olympics Texas family is our first priority.”

Eight scheduled Spring Games will be canceled: Houston (Area 4), Wichita Falls (Area 9), Dallas (Area 10), Waco (Area 12), Amarillo (Area 16), San Antonio (Area 20), Laredo (Area 21) and Gulf Coast (Area 22). Due to the planning and preparation involved, the Games will not be rescheduled. Any athletes who planned to compete in Spring Games will still be eligible to compete at the 2009 Summer Games in Arlington, May 21-24.
