{"id":123,"date":"2008-09-29T21:16:34","date_gmt":"2008-09-30T02:16:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/?p=123"},"modified":"2011-02-19T11:05:21","modified_gmt":"2011-02-19T17:05:21","slug":"bexar-operators-group-tests-nvis-antenna-theories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/?p=123","title":{"rendered":"Bexar Operators Group Tests NVIS Antenna Theories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Garner State Park Entrance\" href=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/garnerstatepark.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Garner State Park Entrance\" src=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/garnerstatepark.thumbnail.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Garner State Park Entrance\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" width=\"176\" height=\"116\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>BEXAR OPERATORS GROUP<br \/>\nTESTS NVIS ANTENNA THEORIES<br \/>\nDURING THE TEXAS QSO PARTY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A group of hams representing the Bexar Operators Group, and using the W5BOG callsign,\u00a0drove over\u00a0100 miles to Garner State Park to operate during the 2008 Texas QSO Party (September 27-28)\u00a0handing out contacts from Ulavde County.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"The Camp Ground\" href=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/thecampground.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Camp Ground\" src=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/thecampground.thumbnail.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"The Camp Ground\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" width=\"166\" height=\"108\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a>While we were there, we also tested our camping\/deployment abilities and did some tests of NVIS antennas at different heights.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"The Camp Site\" href=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/thecampsite.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Camp Site\" src=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/thecampsite.thumbnail.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"The Camp Site\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" width=\"164\" height=\"108\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a>Not wishing to get &#8220;soft&#8221;, we reserved a tent site to operate from\u00a0rather than a cabin. Krissy, KD5YTN, set up the eight man tent while Bob, W2IK, began the station set-up using a 10&#215;10 screened &#8220;EZ Up&#8221; as the main operating area.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<a title=\"Raising the Antenna\" href=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/raisingtheantenna.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Raising the Antenna\" src=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/raisingtheantenna.thumbnail.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Raising the Antenna\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" width=\"121\" height=\"182\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>The antenna system was specially designed\u00a0to allow us to operate from various heights by running the center point up or down like raising or lowering a flag.\u00a0The ends ran on a weight system to keep the antenna taut. By varying the height of the antenna you could easily hear the noise floor\u00a0decrease or increase. When\u00a0a frequency was selected with an active station, you heard little in the way of signal degradation when compared to the lowering of the noise floor.<\/p>\n<p>This experiment proved once again that even if your band of operation doesn&#8217;t allow for true NVIS signals to be generated, the increased readability was a positive factor for using NVIS antennas all the time for reliable short range communications.<\/p>\n<p>We also noted that with nightfall, the international broadcasters were kept &#8220;at bay&#8221; by lowering the antenna from it&#8217;s maximum height of 27 feet to that of 5 feet.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Big Gun Astronomical Telescope\" href=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/bigguntelescope.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Big Gun Astronomical Telescope\" src=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/bigguntelescope.thumbnail.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Big Gun Astronomical Telescope\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" width=\"173\" height=\"115\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>On Sunday, several other hams dropped by to see us and operate. Yogie, KC5MIP, and Steve, KE5QFC, had been at the same\u00a0park as part of &#8220;A Night With The Stars&#8221; sponsored by the San Antonio Astronomical Association that Saturday evening and stayed the night.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Unexpected Guests\" href=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/unexpectedguests.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Unexpected Guests\" src=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/unexpectedguests.thumbnail.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Unexpected Guests\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" width=\"189\" height=\"126\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Guest Operators\" href=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/guestoperators.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Guest Operators\" src=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/guestoperators.thumbnail.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Guest Operators\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" width=\"176\" height=\"116\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a>Frank, KE5RYJ, from Uvalde and the Coyote Amateur Radio Club\u00a0also came by to see our operation and get a firmer grasp on NVIS antenna design and operation.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Bob W2IK operating during contest\" href=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/w2ik_bob.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bob W2IK operating during contest\" src=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/w2ik_bob.thumbnail.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Bob W2IK operating during contest\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" width=\"168\" height=\"111\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nUsing our club call, W5BOG, we casually managed several hundred contacts while testing our theories concerning NVIS wave propagation on both 40 and 80 meters.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"The Buzzard sitting on our antenna mast\" href=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/thebuzzard.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Buzzard sitting on our antenna mast\" src=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/thebuzzard.thumbnail.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"The Buzzard sitting on our antenna mast\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" width=\"170\" height=\"128\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWe had a few uninvited &#8220;guests&#8221; (in this case a vulture!) who decided to hang around in case the bands died. This had recently been purchased to replace an older two-burner unit. The built-in grille made cooking burgers a snap.
