News Items From The San Antonio Area

SK - Denny Findley, KD5YRR - May 8, 2009

kd5yrrWe’ve just learned the bad news that Denny Findley KD5YRR has passed away.  Denny suffered a heart attack and was declared deceased at 4pm on Friday, May 8th.

Denny  was best known for his laugh, generous spirit, distinctive voice on the radio, driving a convertible and smoking cigars out back of his house while talking on the AARO radio nets.   He was a general class ham, and a member of AARO.  His “day job” was providing chaplain services at various prisons.

Special thanks to Gordon, K5SUZ, for passing along this unfortunate news, and agreeing to keep us informed of any pending arrangements.    Unfortunate timing for me, not that it would ever be “fortunate” timing, but I’m still up here in southern Indiana visiting my mother.

…fond memories of the great love mi amigo Denny always showed for his beautiful First Lady and that he/they so graciously allowed me to record on this photo…

I will certainly miss that distinct way of saying “And this is Kay-Dee-Five-Y-ahR-ahR”…

Denny, will be sorely missed. I only knew him a couple years, but I know he was a good friend and fellow brother in Christ. While we miss him here, I know he is enjoying his Heavenly home at the right hand of Christ. We who know Christ also know that we will see Denny again. May God’s love and comfort surround friends and family he has left behind.

New Classified Ads - Free Service

Free Classified Ads for HamsWe’ve  installed a new Classified Ads module for this Blog, where visitors to the site can post free classified ads, for sale, for trade, wanted, etc. I’ve already created a few common categories and sub categories for most ham related stuff, but if you find that we need to add another category, please contact me via email to suggest a category.

You can access the Classified Ads direct from the top menu bar, where it says “Home” “About” and “Classified Ads“.  I suspect you can figure out which one to click on, without too much more thought.

One person’s junk, is another person’s treasure, thus the reason we have Ham Radio Swapfests year around. But what happens between those events? Got some extra / unused Ham Radio gear you want to sell or trade? Looking to buy some used gear? Post a new Classified, or Browse our Classifieds posted by other hams.

SanAntonioHams.org reserves the right to decline service to anyone for any reason. This is a free site, sponsored by N5NTG, not affiliated with any individual ham radio club or organization. We are not responsible for what you buy, so the old caveat “Buyer Beware” applies. Let us know, however, if you feel you got ripped off, or if someone is falsely advertising something for sale or trade using this free service.

At this time, all classified ad services on this site are free, but we reserve the right to change this policy in the future, especially if folks want to post “for profit” listings here.

This site is focused on Amateur Radio / Ham Radio items and related topics, but we put some categories in for Computers since we all use them. No postings offering anything illegal, sexual, or dealing with alcohol or tobacco will be permitted. We’re really not wanting to become the next job search site, or Apartment / House hunting site, but we won’t turn those down until we figure out what direction our visitors want to move toward.

This Classified Ad section is still under development and subject to change, but it’s looking really stable at present time. Default time length of any posted ad is 30 days,  750 words in the ad description, and up to 4 images allowed to be uploaded per ad.

If you sell / trade your item, please update your ad, or withdraw it when no longer needed. If you find what you’re looking for, please cancel your ad.

2009 Tour de Cure Update

Attention all prospective & committed Tour de Cure Volunteers

Tour de Cure 2009May 30th - 31st

Here is an update for the 2009 Tour de Cure. It’s time to begin making duty assignments for all ham volunteers, but there have been some major changes regarding SAG Van duty.

There are only 4 full sized SAG Vans plus 5 Toyota Pickup Trucks to be driven by Ham Radio Operators, due to a donation of SAG services by a local San Antonio company who is providing both the vehicles, the drivers and paying for their fuel.

First, let me clarify points of contact... The following hams are coordinating different segments / times of the event:

  • Jeff Schmidt, N5MNW, (N5MNW@arrl.net) is coordinating
    • all Austin Hams ,
    • all Day 2 assignments for Rest Stops and
    • Day 2 Net Control / Finish Line.
  • If you are wanting to volunteer for Day 2, especially if you are from the Austin area, please contact Jeff direct, with a copy to Lee N5NTG.

  • David Childress, KD5MML (kd5mml@gmail.com) - is coordinating
    • Hays/Caldwell hams , and relaying that information to either Jeff (for Day 2 assignments) or Lee (for Day 1 assignments).

We'd like to invite some of the HC ARES members to help out as Net Control on Day 1 from the San Marcos Finish line this year, in addition to helping out on Day 2 at Rest Stops, etc.
  • Ray McLeaird, KE5KHN (raymcleaird@hotmail.com) - is coordinating
    • all Motorcycle Safety Marshalls for both Day 1 and Day 2.
  • If you are planning on riding your motorcycle as part of our safety team, you must coordinate with Ray. So far, we've gotten about 30 MSM's committed, which is probably more than enough for this size ride.

  • Lee Besing, N5NTG (info@sanantoniohams.org) - is coordinating
    • all San Antonio Hams ,
    • all hams not coordinated by the other three above.
    • all Day 1 assignments for Rest Stops,
    • all Day 1 Start and Finish Lines,
    • all Satuday night dorm room assignments for 2-day ham participants,
    • all (ham) SAG assignments for both Day 1 and Day 2, and

I'll be working directly with with Jeff, David and Ray to ensure we have the other points covered for both days, and that everybody gets their free t-shirt. I'm planning on being at the finish line this year, rather than driving a SAG.

Please let me know via email if you will or won't be available to work this event.

If you are available, please advise of your 1st and 2nd preferred assignment / location.

The routes have been changed slightly for 2009.
Maps are available for download below...

Please contact Lee Besing via email to volunteer for this important event.

Some of you already have contacted Lee, and already know your assignment type, if not your exact location, etc. Some on this email distribution list will be Motorcycle Safety Marshals, most of you on the list used for this email letter, aren't Tour de Cure volunteers from previous years. If you aren't interested in volunteering, then you need do nothing. I'll build another list for just those volunteers.

For Immediate Release: Local “Hams” Take it to the Field June 27-28

(San Antonio TX, Mar 12th, 2009) – For nearly a century now Hams (more formally known as Amateur Radio Operators), have experimented with radio technology, pioneered new forms of communication, and provided a reliable means of backup communications when other systems have failed. In this decade, when electricity and phone lines were down, Hams provided essential communications at Ground Zero on 9/11, in the aftermath of the Indian Ocean Tsunami, in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and in hundreds of other disaster relief efforts worldwide.

Have you been curious about amateur radio? What are ham radio operators, how do they train for emergencies? How do they provide critical communications during emergencies when wireless and wire-line phone systems are overloaded or fail? How can they operate when commercial power goes out?

You can learn the answer to these questions and more by visiting a demonstration of emergency communication abilities at the San Antonio Fire Department Training Academy at the corner of Hwy 151 and Callaghan Road in Northwest San Antonio from 1 PM on June 27th to 1 PM on June 28th.

Demonstrations will include high frequency (HF), sideband, digital (computer generated), Morse Code and local VHF FM communications. Tentative plans also include an amateur television demonstration.

To learn more about Field Day or Amateur Radio, contact Gary Tangrady (K5GST) at (210)383-7872 (cell) or go to http://sanantoniohams.org/.

ARRL Field Day is sponsored by the American Radio Relay League – the national organization for amateur radio. For more info about ARRL, visit http://arrl.org/fieldday.    The public is most cordially invited to come, meet and talk with the hams.   They might even help you get on the air!
