{"id":8834,"date":"2021-12-24T04:45:43","date_gmt":"2021-12-24T10:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/?p=8834"},"modified":"2021-12-24T04:46:19","modified_gmt":"2021-12-24T10:46:19","slug":"twas-the-night-before-christmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/?p=8834","title":{"rendered":"Twas the night before Christmas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ham Radio Christmas Humor&#8230;<br \/><br \/>Twas the night before Christmas,<br \/>all through two-meters,<br \/>Not a signal was keying up<br \/>Any repeaters.<br \/><br \/>The antennas reached up<br \/>From the tower, quite high,<br \/>To catch the weak signals<br \/>That bounced from the sky.<br \/><br \/>The children, Tech-Pluses,<br \/>Took their HT&#8217;s  to bed,<br \/>And dreamed of the day<br \/>They&#8217;d be Extras, instead.<br \/><br \/>Mom put on her headphones,<br \/>I plugged in the key,<br \/>And we tuned 40 meters<br \/>For that rare ZK3.<br \/><br \/>When the meter was pegged<br \/>by a signal with power.<br \/>It smoked a small diode,<br \/>and, I swear, shook the tower.<br \/><br \/>Mom yanked off her phones,<br \/>And with all she could muster<br \/>Logged a spot of the signal<br \/>On the DX PacketCluster,<br \/><br \/>While I ran to the window<br \/>And peered up at the sky,<br \/>To see what could generate<br \/>RF that high.<br \/><br \/>It was way in the distance,<br \/>But the moon made it gleam &#8211;<br \/>A flying sleigh, with an<br \/>Eight element beam,<br \/><br \/>And a little old driver<br \/>who looked slightly mean.<br \/>So I thought for a moment,<br \/>That it might be Wayne Green.<br \/><br \/>But no, it was Santa,<br \/>The Santa of Hams.<br \/>On a mission, this Christmas<br \/>To clean up the bands.<br \/><br \/>He circled the tower,<br \/>Then stopped in his track,<br \/>And he slid down the coax<br \/>Right into the shack.<br \/><br \/>While Mom and I hid<br \/>Behind stacks of CQ,<br \/>This Santa of hamming<br \/>Knew just what to do.<br \/><br \/>He cleared off the shack desk<br \/>Of paper and parts,<br \/>And filled out all my late QSLs<br \/>For a start.<br \/><br \/>He ran copper braid,<br \/>Took a steel rod and pounded<br \/>It into the earth, till<br \/>The station was grounded.<br \/><br \/>He tightened loose fittings,<br \/>Resoldered connections,<br \/>Cranked down modulation,<br \/>Installed lightning protection.<br \/><br \/>He neutralized tubes<br \/>In my linear amp. (Never worked right before &#8211;<br \/>Now it works like a champ).<br \/><br \/>A new, low-pass filter<br \/>Cleaned up the TV.<br \/>He corrected the settings<br \/>In my TNC.<br \/><br \/>He repaired the computer<br \/>That would not compute,<br \/>And he backed up the hard drive<br \/>And got it to boot.<br \/><br \/>Then, he reached really deep<br \/>In the bag that he brought,<br \/>And he pulled out a big box.<br \/>&#8216;A new rig?&#8217; I thought!<br \/><br \/>&#8216;A new Kenwood? An Icom?<br \/>A Ten-Tec, for me?!&#8217;<br \/>(If he thought I&#8217;d been bad<br \/>it might be QRP!)<br \/><br \/>Yes! The Ultimate Station!<br \/>How could I deserve this?<br \/>Could it be all those hours<br \/>that I worked Public Service?<br \/><br \/>He hooked it all up<br \/>And in record time, quickly<br \/>Worked 100 countries,<br \/>All down on 160.<br \/><br \/>I should have been happy,<br \/>It was my call he sent.<br \/>But the cards and the postage<br \/>Will cost two month&#8217;s rent!<br \/><br \/>He made final adjustments,<br \/>And left a card by the key:<br \/>&#8216;To Gary, from Santa Claus.<br \/>Seventy-Three.&#8217;<br \/><br \/>Then he grabbed his HT,<br \/>Looked me straight in the eye,<br \/>Punched a code on the pad,<br \/>And was gone &#8211; no good bye.<br \/><br \/>I ran back to the station,<br \/>And the pile-up was big,<br \/>But a card from St. Nick<br \/>Would be worth my new rig.<br \/><br \/>Oh, too late, for his final<br \/>came over the air.<br \/>It was copied all over.<br \/>It was heard everywhere.<br \/><br \/>The Ham&#8217;s Santa exclaimed<br \/>What a ham might expect,<br \/>&#8216;Merry Christmas to all,<br \/>And to all, good DX.&#8217;<br \/>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<br \/>C 1996 by Gary Pearce KN4AQ<br \/>Permission granted for any print or electronic reproduction<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ham Radio Christmas Humor&#8230; Twas the night before Christmas,all through two-meters,Not a signal was keying upAny repeaters.
