Jamboree-on-the-Air, or JOTA, is the largest Scouting event in the<\/span> world. It is held annually the third full weekend in October, for 2019<\/span>
\nit\u2019s Oct 18-20.<\/span>
\nJOTA uses amateur radio to link Scouts and hams around the world,<\/span> around the nation, and in your own community. This jamboree requires<\/span> no travel, other than to a nearby amateur radio operator\u2019s ham shack.<\/span><\/p>\n


\nMany times you can find the hams will come to you by setting up a<\/span>
\nstation at your Scout camporee, at the park down the block, or perhaps<\/span> at a ham shack already set up at your council\u2019s camp.<\/span>
\nScouts of any age can participate, from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and<\/span>
\nVenturers, including girls. Once at the ham radio station, the<\/span> communication typically involves talking on a microphone and listening<\/span> on the station speakers.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, many forms of specialized communication may also be taking place, such as video communication,<\/span> digital communication (much like sending a message on your smartphone<\/span> but transmitted by radio), or communication through a satellite relay<\/span> or an earth-based relay (called a repeater).<\/span><\/p>\n

The exchanges include such information as name, location (called QTH in ham speak), Scout<\/span>
\nrank, age, and hobbies. The stations you\u2019ll be communicating with can<\/span> be across town, across the country, or even around the world!<\/span><\/p>\n

The World Scout Bureau reported that the 2017 JOTA-JOTI had over 1.5<\/span> million Scout participants from more than 160 countries.<\/span><\/p>\n
