{"id":7443,"date":"2015-08-26T03:28:39","date_gmt":"2015-08-26T08:28:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/?p=7443"},"modified":"2020-03-24T08:12:19","modified_gmt":"2020-03-24T13:12:19","slug":"the-fall-2015-volunteer-season-has-arrived","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/?p=7443","title":{"rendered":"The Fall 2015 Volunteer Season has arrived!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s time to dust off those radios, go-kits, antennas and get signed up to volunteer for the public service events that will be starting up in September and October 2915.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll make another post later to cover the events happening in November (Veterans Day Parade, Tour de Gruene) and December (Skywarn<\/p>\n<p><strong>September 12-13th<\/strong> &#8211; Central Texas American Diabetes Association&#8217;s Tour de Cure (<strong>Austin<\/strong>) &#8211;\u00a0This will be a two-day event starting at the Oak Hill Freescale campus on Saturday, overnight at Jellystone near Fredericksburg, then back to Freescale on Sunday. Also on Sunday, there are other lower-mileage rides on Sunday, basically orbiting Freescale. Contact is <a href=\"mailto:n5mnw@arrl.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeff Schmidt N5MNW <\/a>and <a href=\"mailto:info@sanantoniohams.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lee Besing N5NTG<\/a>. Repeater and APRS coverage is still be coordinated. More information about the ride can be found online at this site.<\/p>\n<p><strong>September 12th<\/strong> &#8211; La Vernia Wildwest Hammerfest &#8211; The San Antonio Ham Support Team will NOT be working this ride this\u00a0 year due to a disagreement with event organizers over something that occurred during the 2014 ride.\u00a0 Other hams from Wilson County may be involved, but the usual crew from San Antonio will not be coordinating.<\/p>\n<p><strong>September 13th<\/strong> &#8211; HEB 110th Anniversary Bike Fest in Boerne &#8211; This is a brand new ride celebrating HEB&#8217;s 110th anniversary, benefiting the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation.\u00a0 Lead Ham Club on this event will naturally be Kendall Amateur\u00a0Radio Society (KARS) since it is their backyard.\u00a0 Looks so far like we&#8217;ll need to cover 9 break points and 6 SAG vehicles with ham operators, so KARS needs our support to keep this event safer.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Contact <a href=\"mailto:n7rf@gvtc.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Moore N7RF<\/a>\u00a0 (KARS) or <a href=\"mailto:diamondw@swbell.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mary Anne Horn N5MYN <\/a>(SARO) to volunteer ASAP.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7445\" src=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/2015bike_logo.png\" alt=\"2015bike_logo\" width=\"174\" height=\"95\" hspace=\"5\" \/><strong>October 3-4th<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/main.nationalmssociety.org\/site\/TR\/Bike\/TXHBikeEvents?pg=entry&amp;fr_id=27923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"broken_link\">Valero BikeMS Ride To The River <\/a>&#8211; This is our annual 2-day event that was changed from the 2nd weekend to the 1st weekend of October this\u00a0 year.\u00a0 On Saturday, the ride goes from the east side of San Antonio (near Houston St and IH-10), out thru Seguin (lunch stop) and back west to New Braunfels, ending at the Comal County Fairgrounds.\u00a0\u00a0 Route includes an option to tour River Road if the rider gets past the cut-off point prior to 3:30pm.\u00a0\u00a0 Both of Sunday&#8217;s routes will\u00a0start and ends at the Fairgrounds, with courses remaining in the Canyon Lake area.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>We need around 4 dozen hams to work this event,<\/strong>\u00a0staffing such assignments as Rest Stops (Break Points), 15 SAG Vans, Race Official Shadows (ham assigned to shadow a particular event official like police, medical, tour director, etc.) and other positions.\u00a0\u00a0 SAG\u00a0 positions include both driver and navigator, driving a 15 passenger rental van.\u00a0 Installation of a mobile radio &amp; antenna, plus amber lights (if you have them available) will be needed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Due to requirements from the National MS Society<\/strong>, some positions require a criminal background check (once every 3 years), DMV driver license check (annually)\u00a0and completion of an online Risk Management Driver Training course (takes 20 minutes or less) that any driver could almost pass\u00a0while blindfolded (joking).<\/p>\n<p>Hams at Rest Stops are\u00a0<strong>NOT<\/strong> required to under go\u00a0a background or DMV check, nor the online course.\u00a0\u00a0 All volunteers will need to complete the usual volunteer waiver however.\u00a0 Contacts for this event will be <a href=\"mailto:kc5nkk@hillcountryreact.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlie Land KC5NKK<\/a>, <a href=\"mailto:diamondw@swbell.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mary Anne Horn N5MYN <\/a>and <a href=\"mailto:info@sanantoniohams.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lee Besing N5NTG<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>October 24-25th<\/strong> &#8211; Tejas Trails Cactus Rose 100. This cross country running event will be held in Hill Country State Natural Park out near Bandera, Texas.\u00a0 Hams provide radio communications and safety monitoring of runners between Equestrian and the Lodge, as well as one other roving check point. Parking Lot monitoring at Equestrian may be needed.\u00a0 Please check your calendars and let me know your availability as soon as possible.\u00a0 Anticipated need will be 7 to 10 operators to monitor the course for a minimum of 30 hours. Contact <a href=\"mailto:trailriding_texas@yahoo.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Louis Upton K5STX<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>October 31st<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>Sattler Halloween Night<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is an annual Canyon Lake event with members of the Hill Country REACT Team participating to distribute 80-100 pounds of candy to the hundreds or thousands of kids from the area who converge on Sattler between 5pm and 8pm that night. Comal County Sherriff deputies and constables will provide safety and traffic monitoring along the 3 mile stretch down the middle of Sattler.\u00a0\u00a0 This is a fun event, as shown in this video from YouTube.com that was posted back in 2009 by Lee Besing N5NTG.
