{"id":7363,"date":"2014-11-29T04:05:29","date_gmt":"2014-11-29T10:05:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/?p=7363"},"modified":"2016-04-11T07:11:25","modified_gmt":"2016-04-11T12:11:25","slug":"san-antonio-rock-roll-marathon-weekend-126-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/?p=7363","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio Rock &#038; Roll Marathon Weekend &#8211; 12\/6-7"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">This year the San Antonio<br \/>\nRock and Roll Marathon<br \/>\nwill take up 2 days.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7364\" src=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/2015_Logo-350x229.png\" alt=\"2015_Logo\" width=\"350\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/2015_Logo-350x229.png 350w, http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/2015_Logo-200x131.png 200w, http:\/\/sanantoniohams.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/2015_Logo.png 518w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><strong>Saturday, December 6th<\/strong>, will feature the 10k race (new event), while <strong>Sunday, December 7th<\/strong>, will feature the normal bicycle tour,\u00a0full marathon and half marathon races that the Ham Radio operators in San Antonio have long supported.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Due to the increased need for our services<\/strong>, we are\u00a0especially looking for hams who are willing to work the timer clocks on both days.\u00a0 The 10k Race route overlaps the top part of the marathon route to a certain extent.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>View the full route maps here.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Assignments will be made mostly on a first come, first serve basis<\/strong>, with preference given to those who have worked a location in the past, or\u00a0living nearby, etc.\u00a0 Some assignments may require the volunteer to synchronize multiple clocks, such as one for the 1\/2 marathon and one for the full marathon that are within a block or so of each other.\u00a0 If we get lots of volunteers, that will reduce the need for double assignments.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Please contact Lee N5NTG to volunteer<\/strong> <\/span>via email <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">info@sanantoniohams.org<\/span>\u00a0or text message (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">210-771-7075<\/span>). Remember to provide your name, callsign, contact info and which events you are available to help with.\u00a0Please let\u00a0Lee know if your radio can do both 2 meter and 440 UHF, or just 2\u00a0meter because we&#8217;re looking at using some\u00a0alternative repeater frequencies to\u00a0possibly minimize interference from idiots. Most locations will work fine with just an HT, but the southern\u00a0most positions may need higher power. \u00a0If you have a preference or special need, please include that information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don&#8217;t forget that\u00a0the clocks will need to be picked up on Friday evening<\/strong>.\u00a0 Once you get\u00a0 your assignment, please take time to locate your physical location during daylight hours, because trying to find your way in before sunrise can sometimes be a real challenge. Roads will be getting closed off hours prior to the start of the race, starting at the north end and working down south.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><strong>Ham volunteers will be picking up the timer clocks &amp; tripods on Friday evening<\/strong> from one of the parking lots behind the Alamo Dome (off Cherry Street, north of Caesar Chavez \/ Durango) and receive maps, t-shirts and a briefing about any changes to the routes (and yes there are changes).<\/p>\n<p><strong>On\u00a0 both race days, our start line ham will advise us over the net when the race is about to start, and help us synchronize the starting of our clocks.<\/strong>\u00a0 It is suggested that all volunteers set up the tripods ahead of time and have their clock(s) sitting outside of the suitcase(s) waiting to flip the switch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clocks, tripods and related gear will be automatically picked up by the &#8220;end of race&#8221; clean up crew<\/strong>, so once\u00a0 the end of the runners have cleared your position, box up the clock and stack it on the side of the road with the collapsed tripod.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The 10k race is starting at 9am on Sunday<\/strong> and ought to be over before noon because this is actually just a 6.2 mile run.\u00a0 The finish line will end near the Alamo, not the Alamo Dome.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saturday&#8217;s Bicycle Tour will start at 6:45am<\/strong> and follow the full marathon route for the most part.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Marathon and Half Marathon races will start at 7:30am<\/strong> on Cherry Street (behind the Alamo Dome) and will end on Cherry Street (behind the Alamo Dome) as it did last year.\u00a0 Please look at the event map routes for each race.\u00a0 There have been changes to which roads are being utilized. One example is a reduced use of Mission Road, substituting the use of Roosevelt Avenue instead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There will be higher use of that bicycle \/ running path along the river than there was last year<\/strong>, requiring the use of the REACT Team&#8217;s golf cart more than ever.\u00a0 Last year was the first time they used that path and the REACT Team&#8217;s golf cart came in very handy since larger motorized vehicles could not sweep that portion of the route.\u00a0 Bryce KE5KFD and his daughter, used the cart to place and retrieve\u00a0the timer clocks along the 4 mile stretch (5 miles this year). Bryce also ended up transporting injured runners and EMT&#8217;s to the nearest medical station as well. The REACT Team has agreed to make their cart available for use again this year.<\/p>\n<p>If you have read this far, thank you for being interested in becoming a Ham Radio volunteer for these events.
