\"tourdecure_2009\"<\/a>I wish to thank all of those hams who came out to help us the other weekend with the Annual Tour de Cure for the American Diabetes Association. We had approximately 1,700 registered riders this year, almost a 50% increase over 2008’s event.<\/p>\n

Erika Bayless, the San Antonio ADA Tour de Cure Director, had this to say about this year’s event:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Whoo-hoo!\u00a0 We made it!\u00a0 What a fantastic weekend–\u00a0it was\u00a0long hours, hard work and lost sleep,\u00a0but in the end we had 1,700 cyclists register and we have raised over \u00bd million for the American Diabetes Association’s mission.\u00a0 Job well done!\u00a0 The ADA staff could NOT\u00a0have done it without you all<\/strong>.\u00a0 ADA volunteers are the backbone to reaching the numbers that we do in South Central Texas.\u00a0 Please take the week to reflect on what a difference you have made in the lives of the over 23 million Americans with diabetes and how the dollars we raised will help\u00a0others\u00a0like our Youth Ambassadors, Greg and Colby. Thank you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Once again, we depended heavily upon the GVARC 147.000 ham radio repeater on both days for our primary net. We ran net control on Saturday out of San Marcos using Al Fields KE6LGE’s excellent RV. Al & Louis Upton K1STX were our initial net control stations, later supplemented by Jeff Schmidt N5MNW who also set up the APRS tracking system for us.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The 147.000 repeater covered all the way from San Antonio north past San Marcos to just the other side of Kyle, Texas.\u00a0\u00a0 Only one rest stop reported difficulties hitting the 147.o00, and that was the rest stop nearest Buda, TX, closer to Austin, which used the Austin 146.94 repeater instead.<\/p>\n

Communications was better than ever this year. We didn’t have any hams in the Supply Trucks, but thanks to Jeff N5MNW, we got APRS units (borrowed from MS150) into the 4 primary trucks so we could track them both days. We kept the San Marcos Net Control Station live on Sunday until about 2:30pm, allowing more flexibility on the course by the stations to choose which repeater they could best contact us on. We also had use of the commercial radio HT’s from Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) which had great coverage on Day 2, but not so great coverage on Day 1 (at least not the first half closer to SA).<\/p>\n

Special Thanks Go To Randall Scharmen and Sterling “Sleepyhead” Scharmen KE5KZE, otherwise known as “SAG 3” on the air, for service above and beyond.<\/strong>\u00a0 They drove a van load of riders back from San Marcos to the San Antonio Start Line on Saturday night after 9pm, returning to SM around midnight.\u00a0 Despite a reported death over night\u00a0in their family, they both got up before\u00a0the chickens, \u00a0ready for another full day of SAG’ing riders up the course.\u00a0Sterling even sent a text message to San Marcos Net Control around 5:45am Sunday saying\u00a0he and his father both\u00a0“wanted to finish the job they started.”\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0At the end of the day, they\u00a0transported another final\u00a0load of riders back from Austin to San Antonio.\u00a0 Randall (Sterling’s father) was heard to say\u00a0on Saturday night, that\u00a0he might decide to get his ham radio license and wanted to know when the next big event (BikeMS) would be.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We transported by ambulance at least 3 injured riders on Day 1, and\u00a0either 1 or 2 riders\u00a0on Day 2, plus one volunteer who got injured at the Short Route Rest Stop on Day2.\u00a0 We used all 4 White SAG vans plus the 5 Toyota Trucks as regular SAG’s both days, and other duties as assigned later in the day. Once again, having our units coordinated closely by radio saved the day!<\/p>\n

Here is a list of\u00a0over 80+\u00a0hams who\u00a0volunteered this weekend, (66 on day 1 alone) and please forgive me if there were any typoes. Let me know if there are any mistakes or missing names, and I’ll get this posting updated ASAP.\u00a0 I know there a few at the Day 2 Austin Finish Line who aren’t on my list here.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Everybody went above and beyond in the\u00a0performance of their assigned duties, with very little or no grumbling heard regarding the ham portion of the operations.<\/p>\n

Following the list of ham operators \/ ham volunteers will be a small collection of photos taken by myself.\u00a0 I’ve added some brief captions below each\u00a0thumbnail. \u00a0I wasn’t able to take as many photos as\u00a0I normally tend to do, so if anyone else wants to submit their photos like last year, please contact me via email<\/a> or phone (210-771-7075) \u00a0to arrange it to happen.<\/p>\n
